Essential Extras/Consumables Contribution
The essentials contribution remains unchanged since 1st January 2025

The Department for Education guidance makes it clear that funded hours cover early education and care necessary for the effective delivery of the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework.

Early Years funding does not cover the cost of snacks and drinks and non-food consumables such as, but not limited to, hygiene and first aid items, wipes, cream, suncream etc. Special activities, not directly related or necessary for the delivery of the EYFS such as the celebration of special events and festivals including, but not limited to, Christmas, Graduations, Chinese New Year, etc. where party supplies, art and craft materials, books, gifts, special food, baking ingredients will be purchased for the children. Also not included in the funding are the costs related to maintaining a fully resourced environment for the children including the costs of repairs and breakages as well as supplying digital access to parent communication tools and children’s learning journeys.

We apply an essential extras/consumables contribution as shown in the calculation below in relation to the funded hours claimed for your child(ren).  The contribution does not relate to non-funded hours when parents are paying an all-inclusive hourly rate.

For families accessing 3 & 4 year old funding, a termly essentials extras contribution for consumables and activities, not covered by the Early Years Education Funding, is applied and will be invoiced monthly at a rate equivalent to £16.76 per week (£96.80 per month) for those on 15 hrs funding and £193.60 per month for those on 30 hours funding. For children attending term time only this fee can be paid over nine or 12 months. Children accessing fewer than their full entitlement of funded hours will be applied on a pro-rata basis.

The essentials contribution will not be applied to funded places for 3 & 4 year old children in receipt of Early Years Pupil Premium and/or if additional non-funded hours are fully paid for example by social services.

If you feel that you might struggle with the contribution, please speak to the nursery manager and we will of course review each family’s circumstances on an individual basis in line with government guidance on the voluntary nature of consumables.
